The Grellsbo Farm
Grellsbo is a very old settlement, which was first inhabited at some time during the late Stone Age, a little over 4,000 years ago. This area was then an archipelago, rich in fish, with good hunting and a considerably higher temperature than today. The inhabitants started to grow crops. The first farmers had arrived. State Councillor Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna owned the farm during the first half of the seventeenth century until he entered into a land exchange with Uppsala University. The Uppsala university owned Grellsbo until 1990, when Bo and Mats and our families bought most of it. Our families had been tenants of the farm for five generations.

Our Cattle
Herefords are our choise to produce naturally raised, quality beef for the consumer and genetically proven breeding stock for the industry. We belive in the ability of the Hereford breed to transform grass into beef. Our females are not fed any concentates, but only consume grass, salt and minerals.

From weaning time to yearling, our bulls are fed a small quantity of home grown grain. Bulls are raised to be sold as breeding bulls at 14 months, otherwise to slaughter at around 16 mounths. Some animals are sold as quarter carcases in “Beef Boxes” directly to consumers. We are currently using seven breeding bulls on the cow herd along with top international bulls through AI. During summer the cattle are divided into 8 groups that graze in different places, up to 45 km away.

Crop production
Total arable area is 180 ha, pastures 240 ha, mainly semi-natural grasslands and 30 ha of forest. We use 90-100 ha for leys, which lie for at least 3 years. Different mixtures are used for leys on different soils (Phleum pratense, Festuca pratensis, Trifolium repens, Lotus lanceolata, Carum carvi). Grain: oats, barley/peas (to organic milk farms) and winter wheat.
